In one of my earlier posts, I walked you through the steps for uploading and cleaning up a coloring book style image in Cricut Design Space. This is a great way to start to work with images you find online, but sometimes you cannot find a black and white coloring book style image for what you want to make. But what about uploading images with more than one color to Design Space? That is exactly what this tutorial is for!
Uploading Images and Creating Layers with Cricut
In early 2024, I began to see a large increase in the number of people coming to my Cricut Layer Guide. I can only assume that it is due to the recent Cricut update and the new Convert to Layers feature in Design Space. This feature was first launched on the Cricut app, but later rolled out the to computer version of Design Space. I have a video below that shows using the Cricut Convert to Layers feature on my on both the computer and on my iPad.
This new Cricut Convert To Layers feature is only available to people who pay for Cricut Access, which is the paid membership that gives you access to a large number of the images, fonts and projects in Design Space. As you can see from watching the video above, I feel that the results from this new feature are not as good as some other ways that you can create layered images in Cricut Design Space.

Start with Uploading Images that are High Quality
Finding an image with crisp lines and no shadows will always be easier to convert to a cutting file. I recently had someone ask me to help them convert this image into a cutting file in Cricut Design Space.
Creating Layers with Cricut Design Space
She wanted to cut just the U without the green background, so we need to create three layers for this image . . . one white, one green and one orange. To do this, you will need to upload the image three times, and focusing on cleaning up and removing everything you don’t want cut for each specific color.
Here is a video that shows how I achieved this, and then stacked the colored layers back together to create the final image.
